The Scientist Always Questions
Anyone who has ever valued the observations readily available while working with scientists, understands one basic difference between a scientist and an engineer. The scientist asks “Why?”. The engineer asks “How?”. The scientist will understand the reason for a 15 foot diameter hole in the ground. The engineer will want to know how it happened. Scientists are refreshingly curious individuals. Their curiosity is the hallmark of their profession. Theirs is not just to know why. Theirs is also to know why the question even arose in the first place

Scientists Have The Answers
What scientists do with all those answers they manage to discover is find questions in the answers to their original question. There is nothing more interesting than observing a scientist bent over his lab bench. It’s an exercise in the awesome parameters of the scientific mind.

The Science Way of Life
The science way of life sees existence, behavior and death as an experiment. Thus, scientists nearly always have trouble with tenets of metaphysics, religion and most things supernatural. If an experiment cannot prove absolute existence, scientists find it unpalatable for human mental exercise. Yet, many scientists possess a most unique form of spiritualism similar to attempting actual control of the black hole of space. All scientific formula bears proof of a segment of the entire realm of science. For them, not the only proof. This is the science way of life: To know and understand that which is yet to be and find answers to questions relevant only to the experiment of existence

The Future and Science
The future for any scientist is the mechanism by which all innovation activates. The future is singularly important. Whereas, the present and past represent merely the barometer by which the scientist measures the future. Their formulaic equation is Future Equals Science. (more…)

In a smart house the various components (like shading, lighting, ventilation, heating and other electrical equipment)communicate with each other. For example: with one touch of a button you can automatically select the right atmosphere for a quiet evening at home cinema.

This house have energy-efficient equipment (green screen TVs, computers and electrical goods) but also things like a smart energy meter, a PV system and a charging station for an electric car. All components in the home are connected to KNX, a world standard for building automation.

Smart metering
Smart metering in the future will play a greater role in our homes. Smart meters will have a few years the existing electricity and gas meters to replace. The smart meter will be used  for individual consumption of devices and also for generating power in the PV systems.

The intelligent house can then decide when to start the dishwasher or dryer, or to heat water in the boiler when electricity is cheapest. Ultimately, the smart meter the best electric car charging time for the determination.

Creators even considered a scenario where the devices also can be operated by electricity suppliers. Impulses through the power of network can at the cheapest rate heat the water in the boiler. (more…)

Human DNA Decoding Progress

On August 3, 2010, in Science, by admin

The most progress being made in the quest to decode the human genome is in finding genes linked to diseases. Scientists in the past few years have been able to scan DNA faster and with more precision that ever before. This has opened up a wave of information regarding cancer, diabetes, arthritis amongst others.

Six years ago, science completed one of the largest projects in human history – the identification of every building block within human DNA. Research during the following phases of the project have opened up new avenues by which scientists can discover information. Increased technological developments have also advanced the rate and exactness by which engineers can read the genetic coding. Much of the research projects for human DNA decoding today are isolated to the discovery of genetic disorders and diseases.

During 2008, research groups discovered genetic variants tied to prostate cancer. They also have found genetic coding for heart attacks, gallstones, multiple sclerosis and restless leg syndrome. Since 2005, 40 common diseases and traits have shown to have nearly 100 different DNA variants.

Scientists point to the fact that few rapid succession breakthroughs like this have occurred in the history of science or medicine. Unfortunately, most of the information gathered doesn’t allow scientists to prevent the diseases and developing treatments will take years. (more…)

Statistics show that employees are changing jobs more often than ever before. Constantly changing employees can be expensive for a company to continuously change uniforms and name tags every time a new employee joins a company. This revolving door workforce of today calls for some new ideas in company apparel and many companies have found utilizing a lanyard supply to be a cost-effective solution for modern businesses.

Many employers used to use button name badges or even shirts with stitched on names and gave them away to their employees when upon hiring them. Name tags made of plastic and metal tend to break very often or damage the uniforms and to even think of the cost of embroidered names on company shirts in this day and age would mean a ridiculous amount of money invested.

Keeping a lanyard supply makes it much easier. Employers that hire an employee and hand them a lanyard from their lanyard supply with a printed name badge inserted have invested very little to get their employee started. On average a lanyard supply of about a hundred pieces can be order for between one hundred and one hundred fifty dollars total. If the employee takes a job and never shows up for work, the employer is out, at the most, one dollar and fifty cents. (more…)

Cheap Silicon Bracelets

On August 2, 2010, in Lifestyle, Marketing, by admin

I used to be a huge fan of cheap silicon bracelets. I was in college and didn’t really have anything going for me. I used those cheap silicon bracelets as a proxy for a personality; instead of actually being involved in school activities or actually supporting causes, I just bought wristbands that meant things to other people and co-opted the enthusiasm. I’m a pretty lazy guy. If I can cut corners supporting an issue, I will.

I got so addicted to wearing a different cheap silicon bracelets every day that I started buying them in bulk at the thrift shop. It got to the point that I didn’t even know what the colors represented or for what cause I was standing up. Just so long as I was standing up for something, I figured, people would give me the benefit of the doubt about being interesting. I remember having 20 cheap silicon bracelets on my desk one day and spending nearly an hour trying to decide which one I would wear. That day, I chose green.

I met a girl in class a few hours later who commented on my green wristband.

“You’re a vegetarian?,” she asked.
“What are you ta…yeah, I’m a vegetarian!” I realized that she was referring to my wristband mid-sentence.

We discussed our “mutual” interest for a while and she agreed to go out with me two nights later. I decided on red that night. Which was a mistake. The red wristband stood for the Butcher’s Union. We only had one date. (more…)

Comet’s Heart

On August 2, 2010, in Science, Space, by admin

In the early spring of 2009, Comet Lulin appeared in the evening skies. If the sky was dark enough, this “Green Comet” could be seen without the assistance of either binoculars or telescope. Through binoculars, it appeared like a dim amorphous blob with a greenish hue. A telescope with a high-powered lens could pick up not only the comet’s head but also its two tails. Comets have always fascinated those on Earth who are fortunate to be able to see them. Streaking across the sky as they do, comets were called “stars with hair” by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. What are comets?

The nucleus of a comet is the solid part of the head. Around that nucleus and surrounding the tail is the coma, a halo of debris. Seen with the naked eye, it may seem that the comet has only one tail as it nears our planet and the sun. Actually, every comet has two tails. One of the tails is composed of gaseous vapors and points away from the sun. The other tail is composed of dust particles and ice crystals. This tail curves to correspond with the comet’s elliptical orbit. (more…)

With so many uncertainties in the future of the American economy, it’s difficult to ascertain which hot-button issue is the worse of many evils. Regardless of which issue personally affects each of us, one can’t argue with the very real concerns of how individual health insurance will look a year from now. So many unanswered questions, our political leaders bickering as though they’re a group of badly behaved two-year olds, each in the midst of his own temper tantrum and a new and controversial bill that leaves far more unanswered questions than the collective country is comfortable with.

The new bill, if passed, will fine American families who refuse to buy medical insurance, much like state laws now fine automobile drivers with insufficient or no insurance. With the potential of $1000 fines annually for families who don’t have or can’t afford medical insurance, it’s unclear as to what the purpose will serve. For the now 50 million-plus Americans with no health insurance, it’s certainly not because anyone is refusing it. It’s simply not an option when families are struggling to make their mortgage payments each month while keeping groceries in their cupboards. Who determines what “affordable” is remains to be seen as well and hasn’t been addressed, at least in the media, to sufficiently answer this and other (more…)
